'Salman, his family looked after me', Katrina

IIFA 2007 - Day 2

Katrina Kaif might be frustrated over Salman Khan’s over-possessive nature but the actress could not get out of the relationship because it was Salman Khan and his family and friends who supported her in every way during her struggling days in Bollywood. And this truth has come from the horse mouth Katrina Kaif itself. Katrina might be very diplomatic about her relationship with Sallu Miya but she cannot totally cut ties from him for the help and support that he has landed to her when she was ignorant about Hindi film industry.

"Salman Khan, his family & friends looked after me", Katrina candidly accepted in the show ‘Lift Kara De’ when Karan Johar asked her who are the people who helped this 19-year-old girl when she landed in Mumbai without knowing a soul in this city. Among Salman’s friend were designer Anna Singh and directors like David Dhawan and Anees Bazmee who has helped Katrina to achieve her goal.

But when Karan questioned Katrina the very common question, whether she is single, she cleverly replied, "I believe that until you are married you are single!"

The industry whispers are turning louder and post '3 Idiots', the resounding verdict is out. Kareena Kapoor is being touted as the "highest paid actress." Her fee …a mere seven crores ...if Bebo has to wield her Monc Blanc!

Although KK diplomatically shoves away queries about her awesome remuneration, she readily concedes to being on a globe trotting spree, lending value to lifestyle and fashion products. Reportedly, Bebo has signed up for close to 10 pricey brands!

KK, though admits to being amused. "Either it's my price or my size that the media is always speculating upon," she giggles in a newspaper interphew. "If I get any thinner, I'll be a hanger!"Verrrrry Un Saif idea.

Crooked Twist For Kangy

She was the maiden choice, but the clash of dates made it difficult for Kangna Ranaut to accommodate 'Crooked' into her schedule. Presently though, the 22 year old has sashayed right back into the Ritesh Sidhwani Farhan Akhtar thriller.

Pak actress Soniya Jahan had signed up earlier, but had to opt out since she did not have the required work permit.

2010 is gonna be a super year for KG (the gal, not school standard!). A clutch of flicks illumining the small town girl from Manali, India, are likely to raise the bar for her: 'Kites', 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbai', 'Tanu Weds Manu,' 'No Problem' and 'Knockout'.

Knockout talent, eh?

It's Playback Time …For Juhi

Brand endorsements and acting assignments are a steady factor in her kitty. And now the former Ms India (1984), model and actress has added one more facet to her forte.

Juhi Chawla did train in classical singing, but the thought of playback rendition still seemed a daunting prospect. That tuneful block, though, is out of the way. Thanks to 'Sukhmani', a Punjabi flick starring Gurdas Maan in which Chawla has crooned two song numbers in her own mellifluous voice.

"Earier, I'd done a classical rendition on stage in front of my Guruji," admits Juhi in a Press chat. "But I have done playback singing for the first time. When 'Sukhmani' was offered, it was Gurdas who convinced me to sing for the movie."

Freshly inspired, Chawla asserts that, "I do my 'riyaaz' everyday and I am open to singing offers." Clearly, Chawla's singing a different tune now ….

Get set to answer Shah Rukh's query on love

How far would you go for love? If you haven't given it a thought so far then have your answer ready because Shah Rukh Khan would soon be asking this question across the country. The superstar's love query to Indians is part of a special promotional campaign for 'My Name Is Khan', says filmmaker Karan Johar.

'Yes, there is this huge campaign that has been designed around the strong essence of love that 'My Name Is Khan' carries. As a part of this, Shah Rukh would be travelling across the country and pop this question to the 'aam janta'. This would be his way of connecting with people who are waiting to catch him in 'My Name Is Khan',' Karan, who has produced and directed the film, told IANS.

Establishing a connection with the people is fast turning out to be a trend amongst the Bollywood biggies. Way back in 2006, Shah Rukh himself did so to promote 'Don - The Chase Begins Again'. In recent times, while Aamir Khan has pulled out all stops to mingle with people across the country for his 'Ghajini' and '3 Idiots', even a normally reluctant Salman Khan was seen stepping out for 'Veer'.

Abhishek Bachchan too went out for multiple city tours when it came to promoting 'Delhi 6'.

As the much-hyped 'My Name Is Khan', which releases Feb 12, brings Shah Rukh and Kajol together on screen after eight long years, one can expect some fireworks during its promotions as well.

'This is going to be a pan-India initiative and won't be restricted to metros or cosmopolitan cities. In addition, there would be a lot of other things happening to facilitate the film's promotion,' Karan said.

'...The idea of asking people 'How far would you go for love?' should be quite enticing for many out there. It should be a good participative exercise,' the filmmaker added.

'My Name Is Khan', which is being marketed and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures, is about Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh), an autist, who is mistaken for a terrorist while travelling in the US. Karan, Shah Rukh and Kajol have teamed up so far for candy-floss movies...so how come they decided to opt for different kind of cinema?

'I just felt that cinema is maturing with every passing year and I should move on with the times as well,' Karan said with a smile.

'If I am constantly going to try and woo the audience with a certain kind of cinema without doing something that is entirely different, what's the point in sitting pretty in the position where I currently am? Why not use it for my own advantage and make something really fresh...I truly believe that if you are motivated just for the sake of it, you would get caught eventually. You can succeed only if you have a very strong conviction backing up your thought.'

I'll definitely marry on TV: Rahul Mahajan

Rahul Mahajan says he will definitely marry the woman he chooses through NDTV Imagine's reality show 'Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega' unlike Rakhi Sawant, whose televised 'swayamvar' came to an end with a broken engagement.

'See the name of my show is 'Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega'. The title itself says that I will take my bride home. I will definitely marry. In fact, the finale of the show will show my wedding only,' Rahul told IANS at Udaipur's Fatehgarh Palace, where the show is being shot amid a lavish set.

Rahul, son of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan, will begin his quest for a bride on TV starting Monday. He will choose from a total of 15 women who were selected after much scrutiny from over 16,000 applicants from across the country.

Among these, around seven are associated with the glamour industry in one form or the other. There are also small-time news anchors, models, directors, a law student, a BJP activist and an undergraduate student.

Asked about his choice of women from the media sector, Rahul joked: 'Maybe they have been watching me a lot.'

'Seriously, I think there are girls from all facets of life - whether from human resource management, fashion designing, media professionals or whatever. I think we have picked up different women from various fields and sections of society,' he added.

Rahul says he is looking for three qualities in a woman - 'honesty, genuineness and a sense of humour'. And the biggest put-offs for him are dishonesty and melodrama.

'I think everyone should be happy all the time. I want my wife also to be happy all the time; what else does one want?' he said.

According to Rahul, who had a broken marriage with his childhood friend Shweta Singh, says if his father would have been alive, he would have been proud about Rahul's decision of remarrying.

'My father had a wish that I should get married, go on a honeymoon, have kids. He wanted to have a grandchild - it would have made him happy; so in a way I am trying to fulfil his wish. He would have been proud,' he said.

But then why did he have to launch a national search for a bride on television?

'Did the media feel like leaving me alone when I got married first or at the time I was facing problems? Did the media ever leave my private life? In the past three years I have not got any privacy. Since 2006, the media has been covering every activity of mine. So whenever I marry next, it will go live - I know it.

'The only difference now with this show would be that it would be shown on a single channel, unlike before when all news channels would have got the footage,' he said.

'Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega' will air at 8 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Venkatprabhu's 'Goa' has nothing much to offer

Film: 'Goa'; Cast: Vaibhav, Jai, Premji Amaren, Pia, Sneha and others; Direction: Venkatprabhu: Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja: Ratings: **

Venkatprabhu has established himself as filmmaker who can make meaningful films without any big stars. His 'Chennai 6000028' featured a host of newcomers and was a runaway hit. It was followed by another hit 'Saroja', a travelogue.

Both the films inspired Venkat to make another one with little known stars but this time he isn't as good as he was in his last two movies.

'Goa', Soundarya Rajnikant's first film as a producer, had a lot of pre-release hype for having sun-soaked beaches of Goa filled with bikini-clad women, Yuvan's enthralling music, Premji's 'strong' character, etc.

The film opens with a satirical rendition of the Naattamai (Village Panchayath leader) sequence - a rough and tough Jai and his friends Premji and Vaibhav steal jewellery from the nearby temple and escape to Madurai. They stumble upon a Maduraiite who was about to leave for London after marrying a European woman.

They also plan to marry 'foreign women' and settle down abroad. They head for Goa where many foreigners are seen and the rest of the story is all about their expriences there.

Merely for the sake of comedy, the gimmicks of the trio could be forgiven. The sequence of events in Goa where the trio get accommodation and unlimited alcohol (everyday) has no logic. More unbelievable is the way they manage to get friendly with 'three' girls and sing duets with them.

In short, most of the sequences are ill-conceived. Venkat has probably erred here in his assumption that if the film is youthful and joyful, viewers will ignore faux pas.

The characterization of the lead character is most disappointing. Premji, who spoofs at leading Tamil film heroes, Vaibhav, who gets caught by Sneha and an off-colour Jai, fail to create enough ripples.

Venkat, who tries to make fun of tested Tamil film formulae, disappoints as he doesn't continue it in the same vein. Premji's 'fighting' irritates.

But Sampath and Atvind Krishna as homosexuals bring the roof down with their one-liners. It's noticeable that for the first time homosexuality is being spoken about at length and not getting ridiculed at in a Tamil film.

He goes overboard while using the super hit song 'Kangal Irandaal' - it would be better if the songs are banned.

In the acting department, Sneha and newcomer Piaa played their respective roles admirably well. Premj and Jai too tried to give their best but faulty screenplay marred their performances.

Music and cinematography are the saving graces in this otherwise insipid film.

Along with the songs, Yuvan has scored amazing background score for the film. The picturization of some songs may embarrass elders while watching it with their children.

If you just want to see Goa beaches full of semi-clad women, go for it

'Tamizh Padam': Entertaining spoof on Tamil movies

Film: Tamizh Padam; Cast: Shiva, Disha Pandey, Vennira Aadai Murthy, M.S. Baskar, Manobala, Paravai Muniamma and others; Director: C.S. Amudhan; Music Director: Kannan; Rating: **1/2

The film is the 'first-ever' full-length spoof on Tamil movies. The promos of the film gave enough indication about the content. In fact, it was one of the most-awaited movie and enthusiastic movie-goers were eager to watch it.

How the film has fared?

To some extent, it has turned out to be good.

We have seen 'Cho' S. Ramaswamy, S.Ve. Shekhar, Goundamani and Vivek making fun of the tried and tested typical 'Tamil film formulae'. Even on television, many programme poke fun at the way Tamil films are made. 'Tamizh Padam' is an extended versions of those TV programmes, to put it mildly.

Amudhan roped in a handful of talented actors like Shiva, Shisha, Murthy, Baskar and Muniyamma.

When a newborn baby utters actor Vijay's 'punch-dialogues', the audience appreciates the idea behind it.

When a 10-year old asks his grandmother when would he be old enough to fight injustice, she tells him to get on the top of a cycle. As the wheels roll on, the the 10-year-old turns into grown up guy within seconds.

From the 'entry song' of hero, his 'punchy' dialogues, sequences and dialogues from 'Thalapathi', 'Apoorva Sagodharargal ', 'Anniyan', 'Kakka Kakka', 'Sivaji', 'Mozhi' and the inevitable climax fight sequence at the Binny Mill - nothing has been spared.

The appearance of 40 plus actors appearing as college students in Tamil films have been vividly ridiculed too in the movie.

Simbu, Vijaya T. Rajendhar and K. Bhagyaraj are not spared either.

The film moves at a brisk and interesting pace with sequences imitating the Nattaamai style, the 'eternal' family song and the many unbelievable fight sequences.

The song 'O Magaseeya' makes fun of the songs that has meaningless words in the name of catchy words.

Climax and the sequences preceding that are boring.

Working in the film was a cakewalk for Shiva whose character in the film ridicules almost every old and present hero in Tamil movies. Other actors too have done their respective roles nicely. Like a a typical (commercial) film, the heroine has noting to do.

Nirav Shah's cinematography is very well indeed. If you want a hearty laugh, go for it!

'Karthik Calling Karthik' , a romantic thriller story of an introvert

Bollywood's latest romantic thriller promises to keep the audiences on the edge of their seats. 'Karthik Calling Karthik' by Vijay Lalwani is a romantic thriller which revolves around an introvert, Karthik.

"Karthik Calling Karthik, is a romantic thriller. You can call it a romantic suspense as well and Karthik's character is that of a very normal person. But he has some emotional issues because of which he has become unconfident," said Farhan Akhtar, lead actor and one of the producers of 'Karthik Calling Karthik'.

Karthik is a very sad and frustrated individual who has lots of emotional issues. How his life changes when he starts getting calls from a person by the same name forms the premise of the film.

The film shows what these calls are all about and what's the price Karthik pays for these calls.

Actress Deepika Padukone plays the love interest of Karthik in the film.

"She (her character in the film) is like today's girl. She's confident, she's independent, she's focussed, she speaks her mind, she has fun when she goes out. Basically, she's the complete contrast to Karthik's character and I think that's how they get along. She's responsible for bringing him out of his shell," said Padukone.

When Vidya faced the 'Shahid' dilemma!

When Vidya faced the 'Shahid' dilemma!

Vidya Balan believes in doing only meaningful characters and Balki's sleeper hit, PAA, was a standout example of the actress's resolve to sign only roles of substance. In Vishal Bhardwaj's ISHQIYA, Vidya's latest release, she will once again drive home the same point.

As per the traditionally beautiful actress, she signed ISHQIYA because she found the subject challenging and also due to the fact that her character was central to the film. Moreover, she was very happy that a director of the caliber of Vishal Bhardwaj came to her and asked her to go through the script, saying that it was she who he had in mind to play the role of Krishna and not a conventional actress.

However when Vidya read the script she faced the same dilemma as her KISMET KONNECTION co-star Shahid Kapoor had faced while signing Vishal's KAMINEY. Just like Shahid, Vidya too is soft spoken and well mannered and at first she found it very embarrassing to use the swear words that her character in ISHQIYA (Krishna) uses so unabashedly, very much like Shahid had feared while signing KAMINEY.

In fact, it was in early 2009 that we had had broken the news about Shahid's fears while signing KAMINEY (Shahid's fears while signing KAMINEY! - March 12, 2009). But very much like her professional co-star, Vidya too shed her inhibitions, and the result is there for all to see in the promos, where (and now the film!) Vidya can be seen hurling invectives effortlessly. And as she has said in one of her recent interviews - Vidya won't be seen in ISHQIYA, it will be Krishna who will come across strongly on screen- seems quite true.

Here's hoping that just like Shahid, Vidya too gets all the praises for her act in ISHQIYA, and that even the film turns out to be a winner like KAMINEY, when it releases today.

Love it, hate it but you can't ignore 'Ishqiya'

Film: 'Ishqiya'; Director: Abhishek Choubey; Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan; Rating: **

'Ishqiya' is a very strange film. Strange, not so much in terms of content, unless you really believe there are sleepy dusty towns in north India where boys learn to use a gun before they learn to wash their own bottoms. But in terms of the way the three main characters are thrown against each other in combustions that suggest a brutal bonding between the libido and the landscape.

To cinematographer Mohana Krishna's credit, he creates in the suburbs of Mumbai(masquerading as Gorakhpur) a kind of sweeping lazy ambience of leisurely self-indulgence.

'Ishqiya' is the kind of cinema that you can love or hate, but cannot be indifferent to. The dusty, parched, sexually and spiritually arid hinterland renders itself effectively to the characters. The uncle-nephew pair of Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi provide the kind of sweaty, grimy male bonding that we saw in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'.

The two protagonists in 'Ishqiya' represent the acme of reprehensibility. Come to think of it, there isn't one character in the plot whom you can begin to like let alone admire. Like the Naseer-Arsha-Vidya triangle the other characters are either hazy or horny, or both. There's a businessman who sells steel on the surface and supplies illegal arms underneath. He's supposed to represent the clan of the corrupt.

Vidya Balan's Krishna is a conniving victim. And if that sounds like a contradiction in terms, it is purposefully projected into a plot that pulsates with a seedy tension and a freewheeling virile humour.

'Ishqiya' is the aesthetic version of toilet graffiti. The writing on the wall is very clear - hate these characters who live by the gun.

How the film finds a central core of gentleness in this milieu of murky machinations is another story. Or maybe it isn't.

Debutant director Abhishek Choubey tries to create two different worlds, one of criminality and the other of compassion, within one range of vision. It's a tall order.

Some of the sex and power play among Vidya, Arshad and Naseer's characters are intriguing and arresting in its swift shifts of dramatic tension from one to the other.

Towards the second overture of this untried symphony of antipathy, the writer and director conspire to create a bizarre climactic spiral involving a shady business tycoon of the area whom our trio of protagonists decide to kidnap.

By the time the kidnapping plan goes horribly awry, the narrative too loses its bearings.

If the film holds you until the end it's because of the principal performances. Naseeruddin Shah confers a rock-solid tenderness to his ageing criminal-lover's role.

Arshad Warsi, one of the most underrated actors of our cinema, gets a rare opportunity to sink his skills into a part of a raunchy, randy rogue, out to get the neighbourhood widow to hit the sack.

But the film belongs to Vidya Balan. With a face and eyes that convey a determination to make her way through a rough patriarchal order, Vidya is tender, brittle, cunning and cool - all rolled into a bundle of bewildering emotions that unfold more through her body language than the script. She rises above the self-indulgent realism of the narrative.

A triumph for the actress. But what of the film? How do we evaluate 'Ishqiya' beyond its politically-charged, verbally-lurid lunge at realism? Is the film to be applauded for forging a new language of expression? Or should that language have been used with more restrain and tact?

Frankly there are no clear and simple value judgements to be applied to 'Ishqiya'। It's partly a homage to the rugged Westerns from Hollywood, and partly an attempt to penetrate the north Indian small-town hinterland where people don't just live with violence, they even enjoy it.

Directed by Leena Yadav and produced by Ambika Hinduja, 'Teen Patti' tells the story of a mathematician (played by Amitabh Bachchan) who is trying to write a thesis on probability, and he relates it to the Indian card game of 'Teen Patti'

The film stars heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan and Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, besides newcomers Dhruv Ganesh, Shraddha Kapoor, Siddharth Kher and Vaibhav Kapoor.

The younger actors said they were very excited to be working with thespians like Bachchan and Sir Ben for their debut film.

Debut actor Siddharth Kher said, "Working with all of them has been fantastic. Mr. Bachchan, for me initially, to imagine doing a scene or a film with him, it was very far-fetched and challenging in the beginning, but as you started shooting with him, he just made all the nervousness over."

"Everything took a backseat. He made everything very comfortable. He took the step to break the ice with all four of us. So I guess that's what really helped us to calm our nerves working with him," added Kher.

Meanwhile, Shraddha Kapoor, the daughter of Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor seemed quite thrilled of her debut with the bigwigs of the industry.

Kapoor said, "It was just outstanding. The four of us are so lucky that we got that opportunity. It was a complete dream turning into reality."

"Sometimes, I feel that it's still a dream, but it's real that in our first film we got to work with such brilliant actors, like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is a legend, then Madhavan is a great actor, and the cherry on the cake was Sir Ben Kingsley," she added.

The film also stars Raima Sen, R. Madhavan and Saira Mohan.

'Teen Patti' is an emotionally riveting and razor sharp thriller about greed, deception and giant feats of imagination.

Rann Movie Review :
Ramgopal Varma is itching to tell a new story in his movies. You may garland him for his efforts or loathe him if you feel letdown, but you need to hand it to him for picking up stories that defy stereotype.
This time, in RANN, the maverick film-maker does an expose on the games the heavyweights in the media play to further their interests. RGV goes into the newsrooms and also behind it and throws light on the politician-industrialist-media nexus. Also, it’s an insider’s account of how news channels that are greedy for ratings sensationalize stories to grab eyeballs.
On surface, you don’t want to know what goes behind the scenes and how, at times, news are ‘created’ by vested interests. But RANN scratches the surface and opens a can of worms. RANN also mirrors the fact that just like there are good and bad people in every field, there’re some rotten ones in the media too who succumb to temptations and create news to climb the ladder of success.

What's in a name Vidya?

What's in a name Vidya?

Why is Vidya Malvade fuming at all and sundry? It seems that too many people have been mixing her up with Vidya Balan!

Recently at the STRIKER shoot, Vidya' husband had been sending her flowers every day. This had become a daily ritual and the unit of STRIKER knew that if there was a flower delivery guy around it was most probably for Vidya.

So Vidya was rather upset when this one particular delivery guy refused to give her the bouquet, thinking that the name Vidya Malvade belonged to the face of Vidya Balan! It took a little show of temper from Vidya for the delivery person to realize that Vidya was infact the correct recipient of this bouquet. Since then it's been a joke among the STRIKER crew members and all flower delivery guys are now directed to Vidya's room with the instruction to refer to her as Balan atleast once. It's been repeated so many times now that even Vidya has started joining the laughter!

Katrina: Salman looked after me

Katrina: Salman looked after me

Salman Khan may have cast Zarine Khan as the princess in VEER, but it is his real life girl Katrina Kaif, who actually looks like a princess for sure.

Katrina is Karan Johar's celebrity guest this week on Sony's Lift Kara De... and she definitely "lifted" the show with her presence.

She is fun, she is sporting and for once she isn't all that politically correct.

To Karan's probing questions there are candid answers.

When Karan asked Kat, who are the people who helped this 19-year-old girl when she landed in Mumbai without knowing a soul in this city, she said: "Salman Khan, his family and friends looked after me."

Of course, preceded by designer Anna Singh and directors like David Dhawan, Anees Bazmee
(friends of Salman of course).

To Karan's query whether she is single, she sidesteps the issue saying: "I believe that until you are married you are single!" Clever
