'Priyanandan'Sufi Paranja Katha' set to release Friday

Priyanandan's controversial Malayalam film 'Sufi Paranja Katha' is all set to release Friday after getting a green signal from a court.

Prakash Bare, the lead actor and co-producer of the film, told reporters Thursday that the Kerala High Court had given the film a clean chit.

'There is nothing that hurts the sentiments of either the Muslim or Hindu community at all. In fact, the film is more relevant in today's world and it shows that communities can co-exist as in yesteryears,' said Bare.

'Sufi Paranja Katha' is a film set in the middle of the 19th century. It tells the tale of the marriage of Karthi, played by Bollywood actress Sharbani Mukherjee, to a wandering Muslim trader, played by Bare.

The film is an adaptation of banker-turned-writer K.P. Ramanunni's award-winning novel which he wrote about 18 years ago.

'The response to the film was tremendous when it was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) 2009. The dialogues of the film, which clearly show that religions can co-exist, were received with huge applause at the IFFK,' said Ramanunni.

Co-producer Thampi Antony, who has played a crucial role in the film, said: 'The moment people heard the film was directed by Priyanandanan, they asked if it was an art film. Many who saw it later said it was a people's film which should be seen by all.'

Sharbani says she didn't know a word of Malayalam when the producers approached her.

'The first thing I did was to read the English novel on which the film is based and once I did that I instantly felt that I should do it. I came with an open mind with no pre-conceived notions,' she said.

Sandesham for a sequel

Sandesham for a sequel

Remember yesteryear super hit Sandesham (1991), directed by Sathyan Anthikad with Sreenivasan and Jayaram in the lead roles? The same Anthikad-Sreenivasan-Jayaram team is now back with a sequel to this comedy flick.

In the yet-to-be-titled sequel, Jayaram and Sreenivasan will appear in the same characters as of KRP and Kottapalli respectively. Script is by Sreenivasan himself. The shooting will begin soon.

The original Sandesham, which makes fun of the political gimmicks in Kerala, is about a retired station master and his family, consisting of his wife, three sons and two daughters. The two elder sons are local leaders of rival political parties. How the family goes through the infighting between the brothers forms the crux of the story

Forget and forgive Jayaram's comments, says Karunanidhi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Saturday said people should 'forget and forgive' Malayalam actor Jayaram's alleged derogatory remarks about Tamil women.

In a statement issued here, Karunanidhi said: 'If Jayaram has spoken in a derogatory manner about Tamil women, then it is condemnable. Since he had sought an open and unconditional apology, one can leave this issue, following the principle of Anna (DMK founder C.N. Annadurai) and forget and forgive.'

The actor, who has acted in scores of Malayalam and Tamil films, lives here with his former actor-wife Parvati.

On Friday, Jayaram's house was attacked by a group of people belonging to Naam Thamizhar outfit for his alleged derogatory comments about Tamil women in an interview to a Malayalam channel.

Karunanidhi, in his statement, warned that police will not be mute spectators if people take law into their own hands.

At the time of attack, the actor's wife, mother, daughter and domestic helps were in the house. They had to lock themselves in a room to escape the mob's fury.

Twelve people have been arrested for the attack.

Jayaram, who returned to the city Saturday from a shooting schedule, again apologised for his comments which, he said, were made unintentionally.
