Call to ban Yugapurushan

Call to ban Yugapurushan

Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Aikyavedi office bearers demanded that the screening of director R. Sukumaran's period film Yugapurushan (the celluloid story of social reformer Sree Narayana Guru) be cancelled as, according to the organisation, the film portrays the life of social reformer Ayyankali (1863–1941) in a bad light.

At a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, Aikyavedi office bearers demanded that the screening of the film be stopped immediately and that the producers apologise for the allegedly demeaning Ayyankali, a leader of the Indian lower caste Dalits known as "Untouchables".

The Aikyavedi said there were several scenes in the film in which Sree Narayana Guru had been eulogised for bringing about many social reforms, many of which were actually brought about by Ayyankali. It claimed that while both Sree Narayana Guru and Ayyankali were friends and contemporaries, the Guru had been portrayed as the teacher of Ayyankali.

They said they had no dispute about the greatness of Sree Narayana Guru, but their objection was in portraying Ayyankali as a follower of the Guru. The film did not give due credit to Ayyankali as a great social reformer while extolling the Guru as a ‘Yugapurushan’, which was humiliating Ayyankali, they claimed

Forget and forgive Jayaram's comments, says Karunanidhi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Saturday said people should 'forget and forgive' Malayalam actor Jayaram's alleged derogatory remarks about Tamil women.

In a statement issued here, Karunanidhi said: 'If Jayaram has spoken in a derogatory manner about Tamil women, then it is condemnable. Since he had sought an open and unconditional apology, one can leave this issue, following the principle of Anna (DMK founder C.N. Annadurai) and forget and forgive.'

The actor, who has acted in scores of Malayalam and Tamil films, lives here with his former actor-wife Parvati.

On Friday, Jayaram's house was attacked by a group of people belonging to Naam Thamizhar outfit for his alleged derogatory comments about Tamil women in an interview to a Malayalam channel.

Karunanidhi, in his statement, warned that police will not be mute spectators if people take law into their own hands.

At the time of attack, the actor's wife, mother, daughter and domestic helps were in the house. They had to lock themselves in a room to escape the mob's fury.

Twelve people have been arrested for the attack.

Jayaram, who returned to the city Saturday from a shooting schedule, again apologised for his comments which, he said, were made unintentionally.

Priyan signs up with USA Company

Director Priyadarshan has signed a two-film pact with Woodpecker Pictures, a subsidiary of U.S based entertainment fund Woodpecker Holding. The king of remakes in Hindi cinema will add another feather to his illustrious remake cap. He will remake the Tamil super hit ‘Naadodigal’ in Hindi for the USA entertainment company.

Priyan will make the two films under his Four Frames banner with a combined budget of $20 million, which is approximately 80 crore Indian rupees.

‘Naadodigal’ in Tamil was a budget film which reaped profits from left right and centre because of it content value. It gradually improved its stature when it was remade in other south Indian languages. But in Hindi it had become a millions of dollars film.

‘Naadodigal’ Hindi version will be the first project under the agreement and it will start production in April. Nothing has been decided on the second project yet.

Meanwhile to further consolidate its presence in India and its association with Priyadarshan, Woodpecker is also in discussions to do a mainstream international movie with top stars from Hollywood to be shot in Mexico. Priyadarshan may direct this also as part of an extended agreement. But nothing is confirmed to this bit

Priyadarshan who has made more than 60 films in Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil is a revered name in Indian cinema. Last year his Tamil film ‘Kanchivaram’ won many awards including the National Award for best film

Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan in Major Ravi's film Hijack

Legendary star Amitabh Bachchan will most probably star opposite Mohanlal in Major Ravi's next flick Hijack. Bachchan, who consider Malayalam cinema in high esteem, had said recently that Mohanlal is the most natural actor in the country and he had been fortunate to co-star with him in a Hindi film. He also expressed interest to work with Mohanlal sooner.

These head honchos had shared screen in the 2007 film, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag with Mohanlal playing Thakur Baldev Singh and Bachchan playing his foe Gabbar Singh.

This is not the first time a director try to woo Big B for a Malayalam film. Vinayan who is popular for 'No star big hit' films have earlier given a try. Vinayan attempted to bring in Amithabh Bachchan for his last film Athisayan, but had to get satisfied with Jacky Shroff.

Mohanlal who has bestowed the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Indian Territorial Army hope Amitabh Bachchan would accept the invitation.

Like other Major Ravi films this flick too has military and patriotism as backdrop. The film's pre production work is in progress and other casts are not fixed.

On responding to high remuneration of the film stars, he pointed out, the movie-goers expect visual treat in cinema which require high cost. He said that he and Mammootty had been fortunate that they had come to the Malayalam cinema in its golden era when most talented directors were making films. He said that he was fortunate that he got the opportunity to remain active in the film industry for over 30 years.

Amal Neerad, best known for Big B and Sagar Alias Jacky has worked with Ram Gopal Varma in James, Darna Zaroori Hai, Shiva and the Malayalam film Black as cinematographer; he is a product of Calcutta film institute.

Fans expect this to be the most stylish character ever played by Mammootty. Son of Alexander is the sequel of the movie Samrajyam released in late eighties in which the star played the role of an underworld don called Alexander.

Samrajyam was one of the biggest hit and had run in theatres for around 250 days and is dubbed to many languages.

Big B gave a new face to Mammootty in the role of Bilal John Kurisingal. He kept an emotionless face throughout the film. In Son of Alexander, Mammootty is to have a similar appearance to that in Big B.

Amal's earlier film Sagar Elias Jackie was the sequel of Irupatham Nootandu. Son of Alexander is produced by Marikar Films.
